Divine Measurements Do Not Lie!
Minister Toni Jones preached from Amos's vision of the plumb line — her topic, in her own words: the unchanging plumb line of God, with the subtitle divine measurements do not lie.
Pastor Roy Jones opened the service with an exhortation from John 5:24–25 and Colossians 3:12–17 — hear the voice of the Son of God, pass from death into life, and put on the character of the born-again believer. Then Minister Jones took the Word: God has set His plumb line in the midst of His people, and where the ball still oscillates, something is crooked. The service closed with the charge from Amos 5:14–15 and an altar call.

Minister Toni Jones preached from Amos's vision: God has set an unchanging, unbending plumb line in the midst of His people, and His measurements do not lie. Like a contractor's string and weight, the Word of God hangs perfectly straight — and where the ball keeps oscillating, something is crooked. Israel measured themselves by prosperity and blessing while living ungodly lives, misusing the poor; the minister turned the line on the church today, warning that looking holy, talking holy, and going to holy places is not the same as being plumb. The mercy in the message is that God keeps dropping the line — not because He hates us, but because He is a compassionate God who wants us to make it — if we will measure ourselves honestly and straighten up before it's too late.
She opens with her own testimony — "I made it by God's grace," though some said she wouldn't — then sets the vision before the church: the Lord stands on the wall with a plumb line in His hand, and He is setting it in the midst of His people.
She explains the plumb line through a contractor's story — the weight must hang perfectly still at a true 90 degrees — then shows why the ball kept oscillating over Israel: the people called themselves God's while living ungodly, misusing the poor, and judging their standing by their prosperity instead of the Word. She turns the line on the church today: the Word of God is living, sharp, and all-seeing, and there's not one of us that can hide from it.
Because God is compassionate and wants us to make it, He keeps dropping the line — so stop hiding, bring your Bible, check the Word for yourself, and straighten your crooked life before it's too late.
God measures His people by a standard that never bends.
"It doesn't change and it doesn't bend. Doesn't care who you are" — not your money, your position, or your title in the church moves the line (Amos 7:7–8).
An oscillating plumb line exposes a crooked wall.
The contractor's weight must hang perfectly still at a true 90 degrees — "because the ball was still oscillating, it meant that something was wrong. Something was crooked."
Prosperity is not proof of holiness.
Israel pointed to their blessings — "Look how God blessed me, look how rich I am" — while living arrogant, evil, ungodly lives and misusing the poor.
You are the temple, and the plumb line reveals what spirit lives in the house.
"Do you not know that you are the temple of God?" The line will tell you what temple you are — and "if you defile the temple of God, God will destroy him" (1 Corinthians 3:16–17).
The Word of God is the measuring instrument, and nothing hides from it.
It is living, sharper than a two-edged sword, a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart — "there's not one of us that can hide from God" (Hebrews 4:12–13).
God keeps dropping the line because He loves us, not because He hates us.
"He's such a compassionate God... He wants us to make it" — the repeated measuring is mercy, giving us room to get it right.
The only right response is to seek good, hate evil, and straighten up now.
The closing charge: "Seek good and not evil, that you may live... Hate evil, love good; establish justice in the gate" (Amos 5:14–15) — before it's too late.
The measurement of God does not lie.
We can't say we're people of God and live an ungodly life.
When I judge myself against the word, it puts tears to my eyes.
It's a hard word, but it's a true word.
God shows us us.
Study — Read Amos 7:7–8. What does God show Amos, and what does He say He is about to do in the midst of His people?
Observe — The Lord asks Amos, "What do you see?" before He explains anything. What stands out to you about God asking first?
Interpret — Why does God reach for a builder's tool to announce judgment — what does a plumb line reveal that a casual glance at the wall cannot?
Live — Where is the ball still oscillating in your life — what one crooked place have you been calling straight?
1. What would it cost someone in this room to fully obey this?
2. Where is the gap between what I believe and how I'm living?
3. Minister Jones warned against measuring your standing by your blessings — what blessing have you been using as proof that you're right with God?
Before next Sunday, take one area of your life — your temper, your money, or your mouth — hold it against the Word of God, and write down what the plumb line reveals.
Father, we have called ourselves Yours while living crooked, and the plumb line does not lie.
Show us us — every hidden place we've measured by our blessings instead of Your Word. Thank You that You keep dropping the line, not to destroy us, but because You love us and want us to make it.
Straighten what is crooked in us. Teach us to seek good, hate evil, and love You with all our heart, soul, and mind. In Jesus' name, amen.
